Over the past year, I have had numerous
conversations with friends who cited Reddit as a relatively credible source for
news and information. Just this week my boyfriend told me about the mass
protest in Hong Kong the night before the headlines appeared in my daily news
emails. Previously, I’ve relied on email news blasts and passionate friends on
Facebook to deliver hot news topics. However, my short interaction with Reddit
has made me more aware of the gaps in my media sources. This led me to think I
may want to start using Reddit for news. Reddit advertises as being the “'front
page of the internet'” but according to Digital Trends writers Jake Widman and
Will Nicol, “it’s a massive collection of forums, where people can share news
and content or comment on other people’s posts.” The popular website has “a
million communities known as ‘subreddits,’ each of which covers a different
topic.” These topics can be anything imaginable. But the site also has pages
which display any type of news. I personally think this specific platform
offers a better platform for moderates seeking information across all leanings.
Ultimately, Facebook is geared towards sharing among friends whereas Reddit is
geared towards sharing among the world, making it an interesting source of
information. [1 image, 1 link, 3 quotations, 213 words].
