Suki Kim

Suki Kim is an investigative journalist who has gone through incredible danger to write her story. Born and raised in South Korea, Kim decided to journey into North Korea undercover as a missionary and as an English teacher to upper class students. She lived in a confined campus and went through the same routine everyday with her students, even spending mealtimes and nights together. She explains that “This sameness has a way of wearing down your soul until you become nothing but a breathing, toiling, consuming thing that awakes to the sun and sleeps at the dawning of the dark.” Though she was constantly monitored, and her life was at great risk if she was discovered, Suki is “said to be the only writer to have lived undercover in North Korea for immersive journalism.” She dared to do something no other journalist would, and now shares her story in her books and on Ted Talks.
