Lab 3: Finding Fake News

I know we have all heard the term fake news.  After all I can’t log on twitter without seeing a tweet about how CNN offers fake news according to political figures.  I know that there is an abundance of fake or one sided news that is often being published.  Web wise states “Fake news is news, stories or hoaxes created to deliberately misinform or deceive readers.”   It also states the influence stories can have on people’s views and help to push a political agenda.  According to Martine Chapman there are three elements to fake news, Mistrust, misinformation, and manipulation.
One of the strategies for creating fake news that will persuade viewers is to create a type of clickbait that will cause readers or followers to want to click with a juicy topic.  I know a lot of celebrities get slammed for always posting clickbait on their blogs. For many celebrities this is another way to get paid.  They are advertising for these false sites.
Some stories are also created just to misinform and lead viewers away from an actual story.  They are also created as a way of entertainment and use big celebrity or controversial topics to get clicks.
The spreading of fake news is like wildfires and many sites and stations are urging people to make sure they are checking their sites.  Some news stations have created Fact Checking sites that will help users to discover if their articles are factual.
