It's More Than Just a Pretty Picture

Image result for front page of newspaper template

The visual rhetoric that newspapers use on the front page of their papers is aimed to grab your attention. The photos are almost always very large, colorful and even appeal to the emotions of their audience. Quotes are usually super bold and straight to the point. The front of the paper is probably the most important because readers can quickly scan the front and get an idea of what’s going on inside. Each newspaper/magazine probably has their own technique in how they construct their front page. The personal style of the editors and the political standpoint of the newspaper along with a lot of other variables I’m sure factor into what makes it onto the front. One editor from BBC stated in a blog that “the choice of stories and the order in which they are presented is based on a number of factors, which inevitably, overlap: how significant does the story feel? How interested is our audience likely to be? How new is the story? What is the context?”. There is an extensive process to planning the front page of the newspaper that we probably can’t even begin to understand. It’s more than just a pretty picture.
