While searching for current influential
journalists that I had never heard of before, I happened upon an article from
the global campaign ONE, which works “to end extreme poverty and preventable
disease, particularly in Africa.” The article listed influential journalists
helping to achieve the organization's mission. Chika Oduah caught my eye because
of her extensive work covering “the plight of women, children, and orphans.”
She is well known for being one of the first journalists on the scene when 276
schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014. Her personal website’s
homepage says nothing about her but instead showcases her humility and passion
for others through powerful, personal photographs of people she has met during
her travels. I then looked through her list of articles before settling on one
titled “The women who love Boko Haram.” The first few scrolls of the article
are filled with beautiful descriptions of young women who are infatuated with
their husbands. Instead of focusing on the horrific stories of the husbands’
acts, Oduah provides an insight into the loving wives and their personal
stories. I respect her dedication to providing voices for those that often aren’t
heard. [1 image, 4 links, 3 quotations,
