The two-year investigation of special counsel
Robert Mueller culminated in an over 400-page document known as the Mueller
Report. This report was supposed to provide insight into the question of
obstruction of justice or collusion by the President with the Russians during
the 2016 elections. Unfortunately, the report did not have a definitive answer
and allowed Attorney General William Barr to decide if further action should be
taken. Attorney General William Barr redacted and interpreted the report for
public consumption. On April 19th,
2019, The Washington Times published an article by Stephen Dinan with the title,
“NO RUSSIA CONSPIRACY, NO COLLUSION.” The all capital letters
in large font running across the front page impact the reader and lead them to
think the President was found completely innocent. The picture underneath is of
Attorney General Robert Mueller standing at the White House Press Release
podium. The picture adds an air of authority to the title in bold letters. The
subtitle to the left of the picture states, “Mueller leaves the door open for
Congress to impeach,” which may grab the reader’s attention as it seems to be contradictory
to the main title. In contrast, the April 19th, 2019 Birmingham News
ran a front-page title of, “Report does not exonerate Trump”, in bold
extra-large font. The title and font are sure to catch the reader’s eye and
raise questions as to the possible guilt of the President. Underneath the title
are three excerpts of the Mueller report with highlighted words indicating the lack
of findings regarding the President’s guilt. The excerpts from the Mueller
report give a sense of credibility to the news article written by Del Quentin
Wilber and Chris Megerlan. Both news articles use their titles and pictures as
attention to draw in readers. The way the titles are phrased also cause the
reader to question the President’s possible guilt or innocence.
