Bryan Carmody

When a reporter would not betray his source, police came to his home with guns and a sledgehammer

Bryan Carmody, a journalist, was searching for information about the unexpected death of Jeff Adachi, a public defender who championed civil rights. On May 10th, Carmody awoke to 10 police officers breaking into his property with sledgehammers and guns. According to Carmody, he "knew what they wanted, they wanted the name." Several weeks beforehand, San Francisco police officers asked Carmody to tell them the source who shared information on the death of Adachi. Journalists in the area were enraged by the search of Carmody's property. It also drew attention to the First Amendment and caused many to say that the police have greatly overstepped
