The accessibility of the internet and
news through our smartphones is now instantaneous. These devices have made way
for news apps that provide notifications and personalized information to the user
at any given moment. Several different
news apps have various advantages to the reader. Flipboard is a popular app that uses news and
information from around the world. It
allows the user to customize their information through the use of a “For You”
tab where it stores the selections a user has made over time and places similar
type stories for future viewing. Another
very popular App for I Phone owners is I Phone News. This embedded app was designed to make life
convenient. Its purpose is to provide
the user with customized news based on their selected preferences. It uses these selected preferences to send
notifications about what the reader is interested in as news becomes available. The Google News app goes a step further by
not only customizing based on user preferences, but it also refreshes and
allows the user constant access to the
top five stories based continuously.
Another feature is that a user is able to search for a particular story
and “get a timeline of articles to help you see how the story evolved over
time.” The goal of each app is to make
news accessible. There are similarities
in the way the news disseminated to its users, including the ease, as is the case
in the use of the top story widgets as displayed in the photograph above. The reading format is a quick and easy read. However, one must take into account that the
information may not be in depth and may require more factual and relevance
checking on the part of the user.
