What grabs our attention to read a newspaper?  Is it the catchy titles?  The colorful pictures? Or just that we are interested in learning more?   Why do these papers have such colorful pictures and catchy headlines? On Newseum as I look through the front pages of several newspapers the number one thing I see they have in common is a bright colorful picture and a catchy title.  The newspapers are from all over and one of the main things that the bright colorful picture has in common with other papers is it has to do with stuff within the community.  One article was about local recycling, one about community swim lessons and others about voting locally.
One thing I noticed is the information that varies based on the type of paper.  If it is just a local paper it is all about the community and even some old murder cases. Any of the bigger papers have some kind of catchy title and something that has to do with politics in Washington D.C..
One newspaper that really stood out was the Daily Sitka Sentinel, it is a local Alaskan newspaper but reported differently than the other local newspapers.  They shared politics, world topics, local news and even a schedule of daily cruise tours. This was interesting as the local news was about Teens being held for murder and not about community service as the other local papers are.
As I go through the papers I look at them and instantly judge the paper based on the pictures and headlines.  I know what draws me to read a news article is what catches my eye and sparks an interest. None of the covers are plan or lack any color or even imagination when it comes to the headlines.  This is what helps to persuade viewers as to which story or news outlet they are going to use for different topics.  Before I even read the article I already have my mind made up about the story and my interest just based off the layout.  [353 words, 1 link]
