Your biggest influencer on Twitter may be a
machine called a “Twitterbot”. That’s right, there is a good chance the tweet
for the link you received probably did not come from a human expert. These bots can tweet and retweet information
without any human contact. Stefan Wojcik, Computational Social Scientist at The
Pew Research Center explained,” bots are in our homes, on our phones, and on
social media platforms like Twitter.” To
identify what accounts are bots, they use a Botometer that scores the
likelihood the account is a bot. His research found on average 66% of links to
popular websites were actually posted by an automated account. The research will tell you if it is a “bot or
not”, but it can’t tell you if the info it sent is fake news or not.
