“Rethink Your Asian Drink”

Not too long ago, many people did not know what the drink bubble tea or have any encounter with it. But in recent years bubble tea or boba shops have been opening up in every corner of every city, especially in Plano. The drink’s popularity stems from young school age children and can be found near most campuses. However, this drink “is not the fun and harmless drink that many people assume.” The daily meal describes bubble tea as being extremely unhealthy, of consumed often. The tapioca pearls are mostly carbs and sugar, and each one “can each add five to 14 calories to your drink, which means that just 1/4 cup of them can add over 100 extra calories.”  This excess sugar and calories can be terrible for a diabetic individual who is unaware of the ingredients in boba. Excessive consumption of sugary drinks like boba can even contribute to diabetes in the future.  Additionally, the tapioca part of the pearls can be described as a type of edible plastic, which makes it extremely difficult to digest. Thus, boba sits in your stomach for quite a while and makes you feel full when you shouldn’t. Thus, boba should be consumed with caution.
