Saiyna Bashir

A rising female photojournalist that caught my eye with her photos is, Saiyna Bashir. Her work is primarily inspired by her personal experience growing up in Pakistan where laws for women are more restrictive than what we see in the Western World. Her photos document moments in gender equality and sectarian violence. She has captured everything from “women who survived acid attacks stemming from domestic violence” to “the achievements of transgender people in Pakistan.” Her work has been featured on several media platforms such as New York Times and The Telegraph. Bashir’s work uses emotional appeal and shocking images in order to capture her audiences and push towards change by displaying truthful and raw photos.

Nightcrawler

I watched the movie “Nightcrawler” about freelance journalist, Louis Bloom, who stakes out the streets of Los Angeles in order to catch violent events that take place late at night. He then sells the footage he captures to television news stations. I found that this movie displayed a dark satire of local television news stations, and media in general. The film depicts “television news as a ratings-hungry, ethically questionable monster.” The film shows the dark side of media, media outlets can’t cross the line when it comes to the content they report on if the line doesn’t exist in the first place. I found this film to be an interesting outlook on how far journalists are willing to go to get a story and push ratings.

Foot Detox: Scam

Salt baths or foot detoxing is a supposed way for people to rid their body of toxins that lie under the skin. I have seen many posts that tell how wonderful foot detoxing is for the body. In these posts, people advertise that doing foot detoxes are essential for your overall wellbeing and that leaving these toxins will have detrimental effects. This plays on the emotion and logic of readers by scaring them into believing that not doing foot detoxes are harmful to the body.

The method states that by using the foot detox bath IonCleanse, you can "clear out the body," by giving "the hydrogen in the water a positive charge. The positive charge is said to attract the negatively charged toxins in your body." This is a scam because the body already has a natural system to rid the body of toxins.

Extra! Extra! Read ALL of it!

News content has continued to be integrated into the social media platforms including but not limited to, Twitter and Facebook. These news posts pop up on a user’s feed based on who they follow or their recommendations from these sites. These company’s use eye-catching titles on news posts to draw in readers, but these can often be subjective. Which becomes a problem since “There has been a decrease in how much of an article that people read. Most people will just scroll through their newsfeed and stumble upon relevant news content but just read the headlines.” With the subjective titles used for news posts, it is important that users also read the full context news content before they share or evaluate the news story.

Adolescent Pregnancies

Image result for pregnancy clipart
Unwanted pregnancies I feel are common in my community. I read an article in which  the author gave his point of view of the causes of an abortion and he said, "...I got her a glass of water to take the pill. I held her hand while she cramped and cried. I was there as we ended the life of our unborn child. Some choices leave scars. Our abortion was one of those choices. In the years since our decision, I’ve often reflected on what happened that summer." There are more than a few girls whom I've gone to school with during my high school years and have gotten pregnant then and some who are pregnant now. These girls got pregnant at an early age between 16-20 years of age. Personally I think a life is a blessing and should never be taken away. I asked a friend who has a 1 year old son what it's like to be a young mother and she said, "It definitely changes your view in life, everything I do is for my son who has become my main priority and even though my pregnancy wasn't planned I have no regrets and am truly blessed. I feel for those girls who don't think they'd have the support to get through a pregnancy and choose to abort, it is heartbreaking." Adolescent pregnancies have become more frequent and although most young mothers go through it, I'm sure most of them never intended to be mothers at a young age. Which is why to prevent cases of unwanted pregnancies to have both male and female protected.
