Dehydration: Myths and Money

Dehydration is a very real concern for burn patients, infants or elderly with severe diarrhea or if you find yourself stranded in the desert. Hence, there are hydration guidelines for each situation. Yet in normal circumstances the “healthy ones,” the “gym goers” flock to their activities toting gallon jugs and fancy steel water bottles as symbols of their commitment to health. Similarly, every weekend devoted parents sends their kids off to soccer and lacrosse games armed with something even better: Gatorade. This is Texas after all and you need the sodium! So we bring bottles of the tasty juice for the whole team! Gatorade did not work it’s way into American sports culture for free or on accident. Gatorade established their own sports science institute. The GSSI teamed up with the American College of Sports Medicine and gave them a big fat donation to present a conference on exercise and fluid replacement. By 1996 the ACSM published their hydration protocol as “drink as much as is tolerable.” A picture of Gatorade could even be found in the ACSM’s 2012 guidelines for personal trainers. Knowing Gatorade’s profit has had a hand in what my beloved coaches told me for years infuriates me but doesn’t shock me. 

Regardless where they come from, there seem to be many misconceptions about dehydration that permeate our culture. Some are more offensive than others. Ph.D. and hydration expert Sandra Godek, has devoted her life’s work to dispelling these mythsand she not alone. Both Godek, along with fellow hydration specialists Tim Noakes, agree that “We have a 300 million year developed system that tell you with exquisite accuracy how much you need to drink and when you need to drink. It’s called thirst” (Noakes). So what does this mean for weekend warriors and concerned parents? As Godek advises, “Drink when you’re thirsty. Don’t when you are not” (Godek).

The article "Difference Between Instagram and Twitter" which was published in 2017 talks about the main differences which is quite interesting. In this article it stated that, "Twitter is prominently a content sharing application whereas Instagram is a video and photo sharing application." Twitter is mainly for blogging and not really posting many pictures as stated in the article, "Twitter and tweeting are broadcast of short messages to the world. It is somewhat equivalent to microblogging." Whereas Instagram, "Just like a social network, you can interact with other Instagram users who follow you, comment, tag, like, or message in private." There are many more differences that are said in the article and it's changed a lot from 2017 to now and compete a lot. They can almost be the same now, but a lot of people always want to find small differences which are in this article.

The Wall Street Journal is business, and strictly that. This news outlet, though it has social media accounts, does not use it as a primary way to communicate with their audience. With anywhere between 20-100 likes per Twitter post, and an average of 10 comments per post, The Wall Street Journal continues to get their news out through printed papers and their website. When compared to Buzzfeed, who has over 28,000 likes on their pinned Twitter post, The Wall Street Journal can be viewed as old fashioned. Nonetheless, this news outlet has remained professional in the way they stick to covering more “serious” news. Articles such as “Supreme Court to Review Trump Effort to Cancel DACA” printed in black and white will never go out of fashion.

When we think of fake news, our minds immediately move towards Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook, but could Tinder and Bumble deliver fake news? In other words, is dating a "catfish" fake news? When googling the statistics of dating sites, it states that "53% of Americans fabricate parts of their dating profile", to me, this is considered fake news because people are becoming attached to people who do not even exist. This is the most dangerous kind of fake news. Although many people never actually end up taking the app to the next step by setting up a date, it could become dangerous at that point. The person on social media could be using fake pictures, false information regarding their past, and even a false name. This could lead to dangerous situations, even kidnappings if people are not careful of their surroundings.

Instagram VS Facebook

Last time I wrote a blog post, I compared Snapchat and Twitter, but this time I am going to compare Instagram and Facebook and their delivery of news to the public. First off, Instagram is a social media platform that is run by peoples personal everyday happenings, and their fake lives which influence others to think they are perfect. Instagram is a place that people get false ideas about people, rather than receiving fake news. Contrastly, Facebook is full of robots and false advertisements that entice people on social media to think differently of products and brands. "Instagram previously blocked hashtags that contained false information," this goes to show that although there is still fake news, they are taking precautions to keep it from happening. All in all, I do not believe that either social media platform is perfect at not delivering fake news, but I believe that it is easier to get real facts from Instagram because it is peoples personal social media accounts with mostly pictures and captions rather than just written posts.

Compared to traditional newspapers and websites, Buzzfeed is perhaps one of the most unconventional. With bright colors and many pictures, this news source makes it clear their target audience is the younger generations. Though their news feeds are sometimes laced with political or economic stories, the majority of their content is publicity and social media based. Their titles, such as “Billie Eilish Explained Why She Wears Clothes “800 Sizes Bigger Than She Is” Days After She Was Objectified on Twitter”, utilize simple words that can be understood by anyone with a 5th grade reading level. Their huge social media presence is their primary strategy for reaching their audience.

This front page article is very eye-catching and identifies to the reader exactly what it is going to be about. This front page was published in 2015 when gay marriage was legalized, and that is very obvious to potential readers. On the front page, the quote "No longer may this liberty be denied", this is a very bold statement to put on the front of a magazine unless you want an outpour of attention. This front page is very bright and bold and uses a very organized approach to catch the reader with the picture, but then the words on the bottom give the background information for the readers.

Rick Grimes Actor is Dead!

In 2017, The Walking Dead fans were all surprised to learn about the passing of Andrew Lincoln, the actor who plays the role of Rick Grimes. The news of his tragic death in a car accident spread over the internet like wildfire, but as quickly as people learned about his death, they were also quickly able to learn that this information was not true. Due to the rumor being started by an internet pranking website, there was no reason or purpose for this, other than to be used as clickbait. Prank websites have a tendency to spread false news that will quickly gain the interest of readers, causing them to share links, spread the false news, and bring more viewers to their sites. Though the spreading of false news is never a laughing matter, it’s funny that while some readers cried over the loss of their favorite actor, the “very much undead actor [was] still making live public appearances.”

It sounds like an easy way to make money but to be able to make a computer capable of mining efficiently is quite difficult in itself. Since the computer needs the best GPUs around to make it mine faster, often the top GPUs will be sold out and be resold for extremely high prices online by people. This has made many gaming computer builders frustrated as it increases the cost of building gaming computers by a lot. There also risks of being targets for hackers. K2 epidemic

While browsing The Colony chatter for interesting topics I came across a post about K2 and how it affected our town. According to The centerofaddiction.org "synthetic marijuana, or K2, have been sweeping newsstands and social media channels. That is because an alarming number of individuals on the drug are flooding emergency rooms and police departments, acting violent, delusional, anxious and combative. U.S. poison centers have experienced a 229 percent increase in calls related to use and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has declared the number of synthetic marijuana overdoses an outbreak." In the post the members of the colony had some opinions about the drug Cody stated "There was a huge opiate epidemic or still is but in 2014 they started cracking down on it hard!" he also mentions "i never did the drug because i saw how it affected my friends". Another member states his opinion " The problem with this drug is now infinitely more complicated than it was when i was a kid." He also makes a point by stating "We had pot, speed, and coke as our only drugs" now a days there are far more drugs. K2 was a drug that hit the world by storm and had a huge affect on the people that took them. K2 is still being talked about in our community because of the damage it left.

Why there are no supersonic airlines.

Nowadays the only way to travel supersonic is by joining the air force. A few years ago this was not true. In 2003 the last passenger supersonic air craft, the Concorde, was finally retired. The plane was able to exceed mach 2 (twice the speed of sound) and would make a journey from New York to London in 3 hrs and 15 mins which is pretty much half the time the flight takes nowadays. So why was it retired?

"The development costs of the Concorde were so great that they could never be recovered from operations, and the aircraft was never financially profitable."

This was just one of the many problems that came with commercialized super sonic flight. It also produced sonic booms that would sometimes damage buildings therefore limiting where it could fly. Many environmentalists would also point out that the supersonics had a negative effect on the environment and with a poor fuel efficiency it was not appealing to airlines to purchase and therefore the cost of tickets where also really high. Joke vs Mockery

Russia's involvement in the 2016 presidential election has been a widely debated topic. Apparently Russia meddled with the election to help Trump win because they thought Trump would better follow their interests. Recently Trump and Putin met for the first time since the report was released that proved Russia's involvement in the election. Trump told Putin not to meddle with the 2020 election in that meeting. Two headlines from CNN and Yahoo News talk about the same event in very different ways. The Yahoo title reads: "With a smile, Donald Trump jokingly tells Vladimir Putin not to meddle in the election" The CNN title says: "How Donald Trump made a total mockery of Russia's election interference" The word choice used here by CNN shows the author frustration with this event. In contrast to this, the Yahoo article treats this much more lightheartedly.

I enjoy watching NBC news app and the other feature such as, movies, Television shows, Television series, new information, or documentaries that NBC has to offer.  They also, streamlined so I am able to view news or shows at any time or were ever I need breaking news information.  NBC purpose is to for entertainment.

In contrast, the world news information app “BBC Worldwide” is a global news with more details of issues such as, law cases, a political real time news.  They bring “The latest news from the BBC and our global network of Journalist” to our homes in the United States.

Neo Nazi vs Car Rammer

When comparing the rhetoric and images used by Fox News and ABC news on their front pages, it is clear that large differences exist. For example, this headline by ABC reads "Charlottesville car rammer sentenced to life in prison" In contrast to this, the Fox headline says: Neo-Nazi in Charlottesville car attack sentenced for murder" The ABC article shows the person that committed these crimes standing near the protest. The Fox article shows the mugshot of the same man. While both headlines show the facts of the story, the Fox headline and imagery suggest that the reader should respond more negatively to this Neo nazi while the ABC headline is much more monotone. The Fox headline makes it clear that this is a bad person while ABC's headline doesn't fully explain the gravity of the crimes committed.

Get rid of them

In a recent meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the topic of fake news came up. Trump was reported to have said "Get rid of them" in regards to the journalists. According to Julian Borger of the Guardian, "Twenty-six journalists have been murdered in Russia since Putin first became president, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), many of them investigative reporters scrutinising governmental abuses." This is a very alarming statistic and the fact that murdering journalists was publicly spoken about by the leaders of two very large nations should be extremely concerning. What makes matter even worse is that both of these leaders have publicly expressed their disdain for journalists.

Buzzfeed makes use a lot of colorful visuals and funny images to captivate the audience. The colorfulness and lightness of it is what inspires people to keep reading. Buzzfeed also keeps things simple and does not make use of either too many words or words that are too big, such as “So, despite calls for Kim to change the name, it looks like Kimono shapewear is here to stay.” Buzzfeed focuses on making things look attractive for the audience. They use new slang so that readers know they are up to date on what is going on in social media.
