California On Fire 

California recently had one of the largest fires in history, called Camp Fire. Camp fire scorched 142,000 acres of California land, over 12,000 structures, and stole more than 70 innocent lives. The exact source of the fire is uncertain, but heads are turning toward PG&E electrical company who is infamous for starting wildfires in California since the pipeline explosion in 2010. PG&E reported to having a faulty outage within one of their lines 15 minute prior to the start of Camp Fire. In addition, the day prior to the fire PG&E placed flyers in certain neighborhoods warning they may shut down power temporarily for safety reasons and to prepare. Did they have a feeling this fire was going to happen and could have they prevented it? It is still made unsure in a report from Vice, “The investigation into what caused the Camp Fire is still ongoing, but PG&E cited “actual and potential liabilities” in its decision to file for bankruptcy.”

People Making an Impact

Everyone hates potholes, but how much? Two guys calling themselves the Pothole Vigilantes living in Oakland absolutely  despise them, and are on a mission to fix up the community. “You can't can't go one block without hitting a massive pothole and having your coffee jump out of the coffee holder,” said one vigilante named Brian. At first, they started with the ones they drove over everyday, posting the finished work on Instagram where they received a lot of positive feedback. The men started a Go Fund me account to earn money for the materials, and started fixing more potholes at the request of the donors. Now, they have filled 50 potholes and are continuing to map out roads that still need work. However, city officials are not pleased, saying that it is a violation of safety and ordered them to cease. In spite, the vigilantes continued on with their diligent work. Finally, to satisfy to the good people of Oakland and relieve the pothole vigilantes, officials have hired full-time work crews specifically to fix potholes. This is a classic, inspirational story of how anyone, no matter your size or place in this world, can initiate change!

California Quakes 

California has just recently experienced the largest earthquake in 20 years, and residents are in fear of what could come next. One day it was a 6.4 magnitude earthquake shaking the people of California from their homes.The very next day, things got even more frightening when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit. Now, Californians are forced to consider the horrible truth that might be their futures. A video presented by Vice and HBO shows how one family living in Trona, struggling to find safety outside of their dilapidated homes. Pitched up in a home-made shelters made of sheets and blankets, families with small children camp out under the stars in case another quake hits again. One victim of the earthquakes said, “After being caught off-guard the second time, I'd rather sleep outside knowing I'm safe than be there.” To them, outside is safer than inside right now. Trona, California is home to these people but their home is not safe, and that's frightful.

Journalists around the World- Ezra Acayan

Ezra Acayan is an award-winning documentary photojournalist based in the Philippines. His recent work has focused on human rights abuse and the war on drugs taking place in the Philippines. I will not be sharing some of his work here for some may find it extremely disturbing. Through his powerful pictures, Ezra shares the suffering and violence caused by the war on drugs with the world. His picture titled The Death of Michael Nadayo helped shed a light on the suffering "Amnesty International reports that this led to human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings by both civilians and police." He is able to bring people's attention to the devastating effects of criminalizing addiction by focusing on individuals and families suffering.

Tanzina Vega is an American Journalist who has contributed to major newspaper outlets and cable news in the past. Currently, she is a  WNYC contributor and the host of The Takeaway on NPR. The Takeaway is a morning radio program that covers current events and politics in depth. As the host of The Takeaway, she "speaks on issues of race, media, and inequality in the United States." In her daily show, she dissects breaking stories by having experts and other journalists to discuss the issues. She also welcomes questions and comments from her listeners on her live show. She is able to advocate for vulnerable populations and inform listeners by hosting this show.

CNN red square with white lettering app “Breaking US & World News” says, “Daily Headlines, Live Video” is what is covered and how they get the news to the U.S. This company also, offers CNN Money stream app (green and white) giving business and money news with a personal touch and CNN Politics app. This apps reports top stores of event and politics, select the app if you want to know what news is.  Whereas, the economist Espresso app brings up issues such as, Germany trade, Britain’s leadership, nuclear waste, oil, etc.. Reporting the development of the money changing companies.

Both of these app have rates for people to post likes or dislikes about the app.

Too Easy to Spread Misinformation

People who were righteously outraged by the lies surrounding the Parkland Shooting unintentionally and unfortunately were one of the primary sources of the misinformation. If they had not blown up the story on the social media, fewer people would have seen it and the story might have died sooner “the crisis actors narrative was being amplified on other platforms, as well. The promotion of stories being aggressively pushed by far-right conspiracy sites raised alarms. YouTube had to intervene to remove a video promoting the crisis actor conspiracy that topped its trending algorithm.” This is an interesting and counterintuitive problem because the disgust with the misinformation contributes to the spread of misinformation. It is difficult to solve this issue because of how interconnected and large our society has become.

The platform Politifact is a prominent source of fact-checking for politicians and media outlets. Every year they rank false claims made by individuals or groups and pick 'lie of the year.' For the year 2018, Politifact chose the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school students as crisis actors as the lie of the year. After the school shooting, many conspiracy theorists were making the false claim  "that student leader David Hogg and the other students were “crisis actors” and not actually students from the school." This direct contradiction to the conspiracy theorist aims to undermine their message and anyone that may support it.

In the apollo moon landing, which occurred in the year 1969, the hearing of this accomplishment spread around the world QUICKlY. It's pictures and information was put on any everything that people could their hands on, and one of the best things that provided the information, was newspapers. When it struck the newspaper, the archived picture of the front page used very large print, but also made it inviting for the reader to dive into the information that the publisher provided for the public. Along withe the welcoming print, it also provided large pictures that struck the readers eyes first, which drew them closer into reading more about it. Even though this was a historic moment for our country, this hasn't been the only time that national news received this amount of coverage and there will be much more in the future.

Journalist in the wild: This article is a good example of journalist in the wild. They lady named Aura Bogado is known for reporting on covering immigration. Aura meets with immigration kids that have been separated from their family and parents that have been separated from their kids. Relevant Film or book: After watching the film “ All the Presidents men” I found this film very interesting. The water gate incident was hidden up very well. It Amazes me how people are unable to control information that the public receives and how big the power is. The video I watched was very intriguing and fast past. Tom Brokaw

Tom Brokaw is an American Journalist and author. He was born in Webster, South Dakota and attended University of South Dakota. He is well known for being the anchor for NBC's Nightly News. He was also known for being one of the "Big Three" news anchors in the United States during the 1980's. In 2014, he informed the public that he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is a cancer that is incurable and affects the blood cells in the bone marrow. That same year, he announced that his cancer was in remission. One of his quotes says, It's easy to make a buck. It's a lot tougher to make a difference." Throughout his career as a journalist, Tom Brokaw has made a big impact in the news industry.

The Onion: Satire vs. Fake News

I was recently talking to some friends and they showed me a ridiculous article on Facebook talking about how to determine if you’re an Android or not. This made me start thinking, what is the difference between satire and fake news? Marnie Shure is the managing editor of The Onion and she says that the opinion has different intentions than fake news. Shure says, “We train readers on our brand of satire rather than trick them. And when we have the readers trained it speaks a greater truth to power.” I agree with Shure. Fake news is often the media’s attempt to frame a story in a way that misleads the public, whereas The Onion tries to address issues in a lighthearted way. [1 image, 1 quotation, 1 link, 123 words].
